Meshing gears trade speed for torque. The ratio is fixed by tooth counts: ω_out/ω_in = −N_in/N_out, and torque rises by the same factor it slows (T_out/T_in = N_out/N_in). An idler gear flips direction but leaves the overall ratio unchanged.
